FAQ
Q: Why won't my speedometer drive go all the way in ?
A: Most likely, you do not have the correct drive gear for the countershaft that matches the speedo drive unit.
Q: My countershaft bushing are too tight of fit in the case?
A: Most likely you are using early style pre-1976 countershaft bushings. These are about 0.002in too big. Use 1976 to 1979 bushings shaft & gears.
Q: But I already have the early parts.
A: You can have the o.d. of the bushing turned down 0.002 or ream the case 0.002.
Q: It all went together fine but the gears are locked up and won't turn?
A: There may be a foundry core shift which allows the inside of the case to be to small. You should be able to get a piece of paper all the way around the big gears. If not, look to see if the big gears are hitting the inside of the case, if so use a steel burr to remove aluminum to make clearance. Also check for mismatched gears.
Q: Why don't the lugs on the bottom hit the steel transmission mount?
A: There are at least 3 different kinds of trans mount plates available; not all end up with clearance in the same place. You will have to use the 1964 & earlier trans mounting plate.
Q: If the track lugs on the bottom don't hit, why use the early welded steel plate?
A: Even if the lugs don't hit the heavier welded steel plate is thicker and stronger and the trans case is also stronger because it has extra aluminum of the track lugs.
Q: I have a torrington caged beating instead of the loose rollers on the output end of the mainshaft. Do you make a case?
A: We get very few requests, less than 2% calls for this 1978 to 1979 trans case. The design is so bad that it uses fourth gear as a thrust washer to grind against the case. You would get better life from your trans if you also go to the earlier setup. We no longer make a torrington case.
Q: On the C-8 trans there are 4 dimples on the back of the case around the countershaft for small screws which hold on a felt seal. Why weren't these drilled ?
A: If you use the later 1976 to 1979 bushings, there is a seal on the countershaft, which works a lot better. If you need the old style, you have the correct center drilled locations for you to drill and tap.
Q: I have a new speedo drive and it locks up when I turn the gears?
A: The small gear is either too large O.D. or is spinning eccentric or out of round. Some import speedo drives have these problems. Use an OEM speedo drive unit, or rotary file some clearance at the bottom of the trans case to clear the small gear.
